Leaking Roof

The fundamental function of a roof is to provide shelter for the structure and it’s inhabitants  from volatile weather such as rain, snow, wind, sun, and extreme temperatures. Water infiltration is your home’s greatest enemy as such a leaky roof while seemingly harmless left unchecked can create structural problems faster than you realize. Fixing a small leak at it’s onset is a small price to pay in contrast to needing new rafters or decking installed which can be in the tens of thousands. A leaking roof can have many causes; broken or missing shingles from storm, pest, tree or shrub damage, deteriorating flashing, snow and ice damns or just old age alone. If you notice water spots on your ceiling or that it rains inside and outside it’s time to call a roofer.

Broken & Missing Shingles

There is no such thing as an invincible shingle. Here in northern Allegheny County we get all four seasons, sometimes in the same week (we are locals after all.) Our climate creates many freeze thaw cycles which can create ice damns that clog up gutters. Water freezes when it expands and with full gutters it starts pushing back up and under the shingles. This can stretch and break over time. If you notice little pieces of shingles littering your yard, or your neighbor’s yards it’s time to call a roofer.

Roof Flashing - Allison Park Roof Repair

Roof Flashing Damage

What exactly is “roof flashing?” Flashing is used whenever the plane of the roof meets a vertical surface like a chimney, dormer, or skylight. Flashing is typically made of a thin non-corrosive metal like galvanized tin, aluminum, or copper. Flashing is married to the surfaces using a type of sealant designed for use with the flashing system. Flashing, like most things, is not designed to last forever. Sealing materials can shrink and deteriorate under extreme weather and years of direct exposure to UV rays and the elements. Damaged flashing can also be a result of the same factors that can damage your shingles. The most common reason for damaged flashing is a leaky roof. If you notice damaged flashing, or any signs of water infiltration, it’s time to call DR3 roofing.

Clogged Gutters Create Ice Damns

Gutters are designed to efficiently divert moisture that follows the roofing plane away from your home. The size of your gutters is specific to the region you live in. Northern Allegheny County gets its fair share of rain, snow, sleet, and ice. None of these are a problem with a properly functioning gutter system. However, when your gutters are clogged, they fill up like a bucket. Once full, the water can no longer be drawn away from the structure and starts to flow back up and under your shingles. Our volatile winters create many freeze thaw cycles. Once gutters are full of ice, they can create an “ice damn.” The ice damn causes the water to back up into the roof. Water expands when it freezes, and that acts just like a pry bar under the shingle. If your roof has suffered damaged shingles from clogged gutters call DR3 Roofing.

Roof Damage From Pests & Plants

Have you ever asked yourself “is that scratching I hear coming from the ceiling?” In the northern suburbs of western PA, there are a variety of critters and insects that are native to this area. If these critters get into your roof, they can cause tremendous damage. Racoons, squirrels, chipmunks, and birds are all guilty of “living rent free,” and typically it’s by forcible entry to your home. These animals are experts when it comes to finding weak points in roofing systems and gaining entry. Do you have any trees over hanging your home? These serve as bridges for critters to get on your roof. Not only will their foot traffic weaken and damage shingles, but overhanging branches can also make contact and damage your roofing materials. This also leads to more debris on the roof which causes clogged gutters and creates even more potential damage. If you hear the pitter patter of tiny feet up on your roof top it may be time to call a roofer.
